Oxford Union President-Elect Removed Due to Charlie Kirk Posts
The future president of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after losing a no-confidence vote that came after his disputed social media posts about Charlie Kirk.
The motion against George Abaraonye reached the required super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the society.
Contentious Posts
The dispute began after the student reportedly shared messages on online platforms that seemed to celebrate the death of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a college in Utah.
According to reports, one social media message reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The student leader is also said to have posted in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.
Vote Outcome
The no-confidence motion took place over the recent days, with outcomes revealed on Tuesday.
Society announcements indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.
The notice stated that the future president was considered to have stepped down in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.
Election Controversies
Proceedings were informally suspended early on Monday after the election official was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.
In a statement, the student asserted that the count had been halted because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".
His statement categorically refuted that any representative appointed by George had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Ongoing Dispute
The student stated that extremely serious issues had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he remained president-elect.
His statement added that he was "grateful and honored to have the support of significantly more than half of university members" who voted to have a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Critics have said that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".
External Reactions
On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an open letter to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.
The letter criticized the society of becoming a place where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the killing of a ideological rival".
The communication indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, supporters would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".
The society had previously condemned the student's remarks after Kirk's death and stated that concerns submitted about him had been referred for official review.
The president-elect had been one of several students to debate with the activist at the union in May.
